How to Elevate Your Mood with Food
For the most part, people have been conditioned to believe that “comfort” foods are bad for the body and have to be avoided. Often, if the comfort food is a high sugar food or another junk food, this is very true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be totally nutritious and it’s good for you to eat them. There are some foods that, when you consume them, could better your mood. When you are feeling a little down and are needing an emotional boost, test out a couple of these.
Eggs, believe it or not, can be really wonderful at beating back depression. Just be sure that you don’t toss out the egg yolk. The egg yolk is the part of the egg that matters most in terms of helping you cheer up. Eggs, the yolk especially, are high in B vitamins. These B vitamins are terrific for helping to improve your mood. This is because they improve the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that dictate how you feel). Try eating an egg and jolly up!
Put together several trail mix of nuts or seeds. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc are all helpful for raising your mood. This is because seeds and nuts have lots of magnesium which raises your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is known as the “feel good” chemical substance and it tells your brain how you should be feeling at all times. The more serotonin you have, the more pleasant you will feel. Not just that but nuts, in particular, are a great protein source.
Cold water fish are excellent if you want to be in a better mood. Cold water fish such as tuna, trout and wild salmon are chock full of DHA and omega-3 fats. DHA and omega-3s are two things that actually help the grey matter in your brain run a lot better. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can seriously boost your mood.
It’s easy to drive away your bad mood when you eat grains. Barley, millet, quinoa, etc are terrific at helping you feel happier. They help you feel full as well which can really help to improve your mood. Feeling hungry can really bring you down! The reason these grains can improve your mood is that they are easy for your stomach to digest. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps kick start a rise in your blood glucose which in turn takes your mood to a happier place.
Green tea is really great for your mood. You just knew green tea had to be in this article somewhere, right? Green tea is high in a specific amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies have shown that this amino acid basically stimulates brain waves. This helps better your mental focus while having a relaxing effect on the rest of your body. You probably already knew how easy it is to become healthy when you drink green tea. And now you know it can help raise your mood also!
So you see, you don’t have to turn to junk food or foods that are terrible for you to feel better! Test out these hints instead!
