Learn How to Improve Your Mood with Food

A lot of us have been trained to believe that comfort foods are not good and must be avoided. Sometimes, if your comfort food is made of candy or other junk foods, this is true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be totally nutritious and it’s good for you to consume them. There are some foods that actually can boost your moods when you consume them. If you seem to feel a little bit down and need a happiness pick me up, try a couple of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, are terrific for helping you battle depression. Just make sure that you don’t throw away the yolk. The egg yolk is the most important part of the egg in terms of helping you cheer up. Eggs, the yolk especially, are high in B vitamins. B vitamins can genuinely help you elevate your mood. This is because the B vitamins increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that dictate how you feel). Eat a few eggs to jolly up!

Put together a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Your mood can be raised by consuming peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etc. This is because these foods are rich in magnesium, which helps to increase your production of serotonin. Serotonin is the “feel good” natural substance that dictates to your brain how you feel day in and day out. The more you have of it, the better you will feel. Not just that, nuts, specifically, are a terrific protein source.

Cold water fish are great for eating if you want to combat depression. Salmon, herring, tuna, mackerel, trout, and so on, they’re all chock-full of omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. DHA and omega-3s are two things that promote the quality and the function of your brain’s grey matter. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can basically help you fight depression.

It’s easy to fight your bad mood when you consume grains. Quinoa, barley, millet, etc are terrific at helping you feel happier. These grains fill you up better and that can help improve your moods as well. Feeling famished can be awful! The reason these grains help your mood so much is that they are easy to digest. You digest these grains faster than other things which can help promote your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel happier, mood wise.

Green tea is really great for your mood. You just knew green tea had to be mentioned, right? Green tea is loaded with an amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies have found that this amino acid basically stimulates brain waves. This helps better your mental acuity while relaxing the rest of your body. You already knew green tea could help you become better. Now you are well aware that green tea helps you to elevate your moods too!

Now you can see that junk food isn’t necessarily what you need to eat when you are wanting to help your moods get better. Try some of these instead!
