Learn How to Improve Your Mood with Food

For the most part, people have been trained to think that “comfort” foods are terrible for the body and should be avoided. Often, if your comfort food is made of candy or other junk foods, this is true. Otherwise, comfort foods may be very nourishing and good for you. There are several foods that actually can boost your moods when you eat them. If you feel a little bit down and you’re needing an emotional pick me up, try some of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be truly great at fighting back depression. You should be sure, however, that what you make includes the yolk. The egg yolk is the most crucial part of the egg in terms of helping raise your mood. Eggs, the egg yolk especially, are stuffed full of B vitamins. The B vitamin family can be great for elevating your mood. This is because they help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that dictate your mood–run better. Try eating an egg and be happy!

Put together several trail mix of nuts or seeds. Your mood can be improved by consuming peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera. This is because seeds and nuts have plenty of magnesium which boosts your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is a feel-good chemical that dictates to the brain how to feel at any given point in time. The more of this chemical in your brain, the better you’ll feel. Not just that, nuts, specifically, are a great source of protein.

Cold water fish are great if you want to feel happier. Tuna, trout, mackerel, herring and wild salmon are all rich in omega-3s and DHA. These are two substances that promote the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s the truth: eating tuna fish sandwiches can really help you battle your depression.

Grains can be excellent for driving away a bad mood. Quinoa, barley, teff, millet, etc are all good for helping you be in a happier state of mind. They can help you feel full for longer as well, helping you feel better. Feeling starved can actually make you feel awful! These grains can help your mood elevate as it’s not at all hard for your body to digest them. You digest these foods more quickly than other things which can help increase your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel more pleasant, mood wise.

Your mood could actually be helped by green tea. You were sure green tea had to be included in this article, right? Green tea is high in a particular amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies have discovered that this amino acid essentially stimulates brain waves. This helps sharpen your mental energy while simultaneously relaxing the rest of your body. You already knew green tea could help you be better. And now you are aware that green tea can help you be happier also!

As you can see, you don’t need to eat junk food or foods that are terrible for you to feel better! Try some of these hints instead.
