Try Using Food to Improve Your Mood

For the most part, people have been trained to think that “comfort” foods are not good for the body and need to be avoided. If your comfort food is candy or junk food this can be true. Other times, comfort foods can be utterly nourishing and good for us to eat. There are several foods that, when you consume them, can better your mood. If you are feeling a little bit down and need a happiness pick me up, try a couple of these.

Eggs, you may be amazed to discover, are wonderful at fighting depression. Just see to it that you don’t toss out the yolk. The yolk is the most crucial part of the egg iwhen it comes to helping raise your mood. Eggs, the yolks particularly, are loaded with B vitamins. The B vitamin family can be great for raising your mood. This is because these vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that affect your mood–work better. Eat an egg and feel happier!

Make a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc are all good for elevating your mood. This is because these nuts are loaded with magnesium, which helps to raise serotonin levels. Serotonin is referred to as the “feel good” chemical substance and it tells your brain how you should be feeling day in and day out. The more serotonin you have, the better you are going to feel. Not only that, nuts, specifically, are a great protein source.

If you want to battle depression, you should eat some cold water fish. Salmon, herring, tuna, mackerel, trout, etc, they’re all high in omega-3s and DHA. These are two substances that promote the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s true: chomping on a tuna fish sandwich can basically help you fight depression.

It’s easy to fight your bad mood when you eat grains. Barley, quinoa, millet, teff, etc are all great for helping you be in a happier state of mind. They can help you feel full for longer too, which can help your mood too. Feeling hungry can be terrible! These grains can improve your mood as it’s easy for your body to digest them. You digest them faster than other things which can help promote your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel better, mood wise.

Your mood could really be helped by green tea. You were simply anticipating to read that here, weren’t you? Green tea is packed full of an amino acid called L-theanine. Studies have shown that this amino acid basically stimulates brain waves. This helps better your mental sharpness while calming the rest of your body. You already knew that green tea helps you feel a lot healthier. Now you know that applies to your mood too!

You can see, you don’t need to eat junk food or foods that are terrible for you to feel better! Go with these suggestions instead!
