How to Elevate Your Mood with Food
Most of us think that comfort foods are bad for us and that we must keep away from them. At times, if your comfort food is basically candy or other junk foods, this holds true. Other times, though, comfort foods can be completely nutritious and it’s good for you to consume them. There are a number of foods that, when you consume them, can better your mood. If you seem to feel a little bit down and need a happiness pick me up, try a couple of these.
Eggs, believe it or not, are fantastic for helping you fight depression. You need to make sure, however, that what you make includes the yolk. Whenever you want to cheer yourself up, the egg yolk is the most crucial part of the egg. Eggs, the yolk in particular, are high in B vitamins. B vitamins can truly help you elevate your mood. This is because the B vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that control your mood–run better. Try eating an egg and cheer up!
Build a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera are all terrific for helping to raise your mood. This is because these nuts are rich in magnesium, which helps to increase serotonin production. Serotonin is a feel-good substance that dictates to the brain how to feel at any given time. The more serotonin you have, the more pleasant you will feel. Not only that but nuts, specifically, are a great protein food source.
Cold water fish are excellent if you want to be in a better mood. Cold water fish like tuna, trout and wild salmon are chock full of DHA and omega-3 fats. These are two substances that promote the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can basically help you fight depression.
It’s easy to overcome your bad mood when you are eating grains. Millet, quinoa, barley, etc are terrific at helping you have a happier mood. These grains fill you up better and that can help elevate your moods too. Feeling hungry can truly bring you down! The reason these grains are so wonderful for your mood is that they are easy for your body to digest and process. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps raise your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, raises your mood.
Green tea is wonderful for moods. You knew green tea had to be in this article somewhere, right? Green tea is loaded with a specific amino acid called L-theanine. Studies prove that this specific amino acid can actually stimulate brain waves. This will better your brain’s focus while at the same loosening up the rest of your body. You likely already knew it is not difficult to become healthy when you consume green tea. And now you are aware that green tea can help improve your mood too!
As you can see, you don’t need to eat all that junk food when you are wanting to feel better! Try some of these instead!
