Steps to make Mizu-yokan (Soft Sweet Bean Paste) Flavored with Rum:
  1. Heat ☆ ingredients in a small sauce pan. After bringing it to a boil, reduce the heat to low and continue cooking, stirring with a wooden spatula for 1 to 2 minutes until the powdered kanten is dissolved completely.

  4. After it's chilled, remove it from the container and serve. I wrapped the yokan with salted cherry leaves, which I had kept in the crisper drawer of my fridge for a long time. They're optional.
  5. Note 1: If you have difficulties removing the yokan from the container, gently run the tip of a toothpick along the edge of the container. Be sure not to push it in too far.
  6. Note 2: After step 5, flip it over. The container should come off easily.
  7. Note 3: You can use any container, such as pudding moulds, if you don't mind that the shape isn't like the real thing. Kanten produces a very firm yokan, so it's good to make as gifts for when you visit people.

Foods That Can Make You Happy

Mostly, people have been conditioned to think that “comfort” foods are bad for the body and should be avoided. At times, if your comfort food is essentially candy or other junk foods, this is true. Other times, though, comfort foods can be totally healthy and it’s good for you to consume them. There are a number of foods that, when you consume them, may boost your mood. If you are feeling a little bit down and you’re needing an emotional pick me up, try several of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, are fantastic for helping you fight depression. Just be sure that you do not throw away the yolk. The yolk is the most essential part of the egg in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, the yolks in particular, are rich in B vitamins. The B vitamin family can be great for boosting your mood. This is because they increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that affect how you feel). Eat an egg and be happy!

Make a trail mixout of various seeds and nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etc are all great for helping to raise your mood. This is because these nuts are rich in magnesium, which helps to raise your production of serotonin. Serotonin is called the “feel good” substance that our body produces and it tells your brain how you should be feeling day in and day out. The more of it in your brain, the happier you’ll feel. Not only that, nuts, specifically, are a great protein food source.

Cold water fish are good if you are wanting to feel better. Herring, trout, tuna, wild salmon, and mackerel are all full of omega-3 fats and DHA. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that really help the grey matter in your brain work a lot better. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can greatly elevate your mood.

Some grains are truly wonderful for fighting off bad moods. Quinoa, barley, teff, millet, etc are all great for helping you feel better. These grains can help you feel full for longer also, which is a mood improver. Feeling famished can really make you feel terrible! The reason these grains can improve your mood is that they are easy for your stomach to digest. You digest these foods more quickly than other things which can help increase your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel more pleasant, mood wise.

Green tea is actually excellent for your mood. You were sure green tea had to be mentioned, right? Green tea is rich in a particular amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Studies have found that this amino acid basically stimulates brain waves. This helps raise your mental focus while relaxing the rest of your body. You probably already knew it is not difficult to be healthy when you consume green tea. Now you are aware that it helps you to elevate your moods as well!

You can see, you don’t need junk food or foods that are not good for you so you can feel better! Test out these tips instead!
