Turn to Food to Elevate Your Mood
A lot of us have been trained to think that comfort foods are bad and should be avoided. Often, if your comfort food is a sugary food or another junk food, this is true. Otherwise, comfort foods may be super nourishing and good for you. Some foods really do boost your mood when you consume them. If you seem to feel a little bit down and need a happiness pick me up, try a couple of these.
Eggs, believe it or not, can be actually terrific at dealing with depression. Just be sure that you do not throw away the yolk. Whenever you would like to cheer yourself up, the yolk is the most essential part of the egg. Eggs, specifically the yolks, are rich in B vitamins. B vitamins can be fantastic for lifting up your mood. This is because the B vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that dictate your mood–run better. Consume an egg and jolly up!
Build a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Your mood can be raised by consuming peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera. This is possible since these foods are high in magnesium which raises serotonin production. Serotonin is the “feel good” natural substance that directs your brain how you feel at all times. The more serotonin you have, the better you are going to feel. Not only that, nuts, specifically, are a great protein food source.
If you would like to fight depression, you should eat some cold water fish. Salmon, herring, tuna fish, mackerel, trout, etc, they’re all loaded with omega-3 and DHA. These are two substances that promote the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can greatly raise your mood.
Some grains are really excellent for driving away bad moods. Barley, quinoa, millet, teff, etc are all excellent for helping you be in a happier state of mind. They help you feel full too which can really help to improve your mood. It’s easy to feel depressed when you feel famished! These grains can elevate your mood because it’s not at all hard for your body to digest them. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps kick up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, improves your mood.
Your mood can really be helped by green tea. You were simply waiting to read that in this article, weren’t you? Green tea has been found to be rich in an amino acid called L-theanine. Studies have found that this amino acid basically stimulates brain waves. This helps focus your mental energy while simultaneously making the rest of your body more relaxed. You already knew that green tea helps you feel healthier. Now you know that it helps you to raise your moods as well!
Now you know that junk food isn’t necessarily what you should eat when you are wanting to help your moods get better. Try several of these instead!
