How to Elevate Your Mood with Food

For the most part, people have been trained to believe that “comfort” foods are not good for the body and need to be avoided. But if your comfort food is candy or junk food this can be true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be completely nourishing and it’s good for you to consume them. Some foods actually do elevate your mood when you consume them. When you are feeling a little down and are needing an emotional pick-me-up, test out a few of these.

Eggs, you may be surprised to learn, are fantastic at combating depression. Just be sure that you do not throw out the yolk. When you wish to cheer yourself up, the egg yolk is the most crucial part of the egg. Eggs, specifically the egg yolks, are full of B vitamins. These B vitamins are wonderful for helping to raise your mood. This is because they help in improving the function of your neural transmitters, the components of your brain that control your mood. Try eating an egg and be happy!

Put together a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etcetera are all wonderful for elevating your mood. This is because seeds and nuts have a lot of magnesium which raises your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is a feel-good chemical substance that directs the brain how to feel at any given point in time. The more serotonin you have, the better you will feel. Not just that, nuts, specifically, are a fantastic protein source.

Cold water fish are good if you are wanting to feel happier. Tuna, trout, mackerel, herring and wild salmon are all high in omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. These are two things that truly help the grey matter in your brain run a lot better. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can seriously boost your mood.

It’s easy to fight your bad mood when you consume grains. Barley, quinoa, millet, teff, etc are all good for helping you feel better. They help you feel full also which can truly help to make your mood better. It’s easy to feel a little bit off when you are starving! The reason these grains elevate your mood is that they are not hard to digest. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps promote a rise in your glucose levels which in turn kicks up your mood to a happier place.

Green tea is fantastic for moods. You just knew green tea had to be mentioned, right? Green tea has been found to be rich in an amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies have found that this amino acid basically induces brain waves. This will improve your brain’s focus while at the same calming the rest of your body. You knew green tea could help you feel so much healthier. Now you are well aware that it helps you to raise your moods also!

As you can see, you don’t need to stuff your face with junk food when you want to feel better! Try these tips instead!
