Many of us think that comfort foods are terrible for us and that we need to avoid them. But if your comfort food is candy or junk food this is true. Otherwise, comfort foods may be really nutritious and good for you. Several foods actually do boost your mood when you consume them. When you feel a little down and are in need of an emotional pick-me-up, try a couple of these.

Eggs, you might be surprised to find out, are fantastic at combating depression. Just make sure that you don’t throw away the egg yolk. Whenever you want to cheer yourself up, the yolk is the most vital part of the egg. Eggs, the yolk in particular, are stuffed full of B vitamins. B vitamins can really help you boost your mood. This is because these vitamins improve the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that dictate how you feel). Eat a few eggs to cheer up!

Build a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, and so on are all good for raising your mood. This is possible as these foods have a bunch of magnesium which raises serotonin production. Serotonin is the “feel good” natural substance that dictates to your brain how you feel all the time. The more serotonin you have, the better you are going to feel. Not just that, nuts, in particular, are a terrific protein source.

If you want to fight depression, you should eat some cold water fish. Herring, trout, tuna, wild salmon, and mackerel are all high in omega-3s and DHA. These are two substances that increase the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s true: chomping on a tuna fish sandwich can really help you fight back depression.

Grains can be great for overcoming a bad mood. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all really wonderful for helping boost your happiness levels. They fill you up better and that can help improve your moods also. Feeling famished can truly make you feel awful! The reason these grains help your mood so much is that they are not hard to digest. You digest them more quickly than other foods which can help boost your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel more pleasant, mood wise.

Green tea is actually excellent for your mood. You just knew green tea had to be in this article somewhere, right? Green tea is loaded with a particular amino acid called L-theanine.
